When you go to Bromo via Probolinggo, dont forget to stop by at this stunning Madakaripura Waterfall. This gorgeous 200m high waterfall is only 1 hour drive from Bromo. The location of this waterfall is at the end of a deep valley in the foothills of Tengger. A beautiful green scenery along the way becomes another entertainment.
The large statue of Patih Majapahit, Gajah Mada sitting meditation will greet each visitor before they proceed further into the center of the waterfall. Madakaripura Waterfall believed to be the last meditation of Gajah Mada, a legendary war general from Majapahit Kingdom. He is believed to be the one that conquer the whole Indonesia archipelago. And on the main waterfall, you can see a cave, believed to be the meditation cave of Gajah Mada. Based on this belief, there are still many people who come to this waterfall to meditate or do some rituals, particularly at night of 1 Suro in Javanese New Year.
This waterfall called perennial waterfall because it never stops pouring water curtain. And to get to the main waterfall you have to pass underneath the water curtain. What makes this waterfall unique is, its not just 1 big waterfall. But there are several smaller waterfall with spring water you have to pass through. And at the end, you will find the biggest waterfall shaped like a well, with a deep pool underneath. You can dip into the pool and enjoy the fresh water. So be ready to get wet!
BEST TIME TO VISIT
Don’t visit this place during the rainy season! The danger of flash floods and landslides could endanger the visitors in the rainy season. However, you can try your luck, and the guides here will warn and stop you when its not safe to come. Visit this place right after the rainy season, between the months of June – September.
TRACK AND DESTINATIONS
To reach this waterfall, you need to walk about 30 minutes from the entrance gate. You will walk through a pedestrian walk with river and hills beside you. Although not until right at the waterfalls, you will most likely get wet by the curtain of water that rained down from the cliffs that you went through. You will have to walk through small river or climb up stones under the waterfall.
The water is refreshingly cool around 10-15 degree Celcius.
