Safety on JVTO Tours

1. Our Approach to Safety

JVTO is a licensed Indonesian inbound tour operator based in Bondowoso and led by an active Tourist Police officer. That directly influences how we design and run tours:

  • We plan routes and timings with real local regulations and risk patterns in mind.
  • We work only with drivers, guides and partners we can brief, train, and hold accountable.
  • We use documented processes instead of informal “shortcuts”.

Every JVTO tour is private-only. That means:

  • No open-group buses.
  • No mixing with strangers.
  • Your group gets its own vehicle, schedule and briefings.

2. Official Information Sources We Monitor

Before and during your tour, we follow official sources for volcanic and geohazard information, in particular:

  • MAGMA Indonesia – the official web and mobile platform of PVMBG (the Indonesian Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation). It provides integrated, near real-time information on volcanic activity, earthquakes, tsunami risk and ground movement, along with maps and recommendations for the public. (esdm.lampungprov.go.id)
  • Volcanic Activity Reports (VAR) and hazard maps from MAGMA and PVMBG, which summarize current alert levels and recommended exclusion zones for each volcano. (esdm.lampungprov.go.id)
  • Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation (VONA) – a specialized service within the MAGMA system that issues notices about ash emissions for aviation safety. These notices give clear, coded updates on volcanic ash clouds that may affect airspace and nearby regions. (NU Online)

For advanced users who want to see raw notices, you can consult the official VONA feed for the relevant volcano via:

https://magma.esdm.go.id/v1/vona?code=KRA

This is a technical endpoint designed primarily for aviation and professional users. JVTO monitors official updates and interprets them for tour planning; guests do not need to decode technical codes themselves.

  • Local authorities and park management – we stay in contact with gate staff, rangers, and local officials for the latest on access, closures and practical safety conditions.

Your itinerary can change if these sources show a risk that is incompatible with safe tourism. When that happens, we follow the rules in /travel-guide/weather-and-closures and /travel-guide/booking-information.

3. How Safety Is Built into Each Tour

On every JVTO tour, we aim for:

  • Private vehicles with professional drivers who know local roads and weather patterns.
  • Licensed local guides around Bromo, Ijen and Tumpak Sewu, familiar with trails, crowd patterns and local rules.
  • Structured briefings before key activities, including:
  • What to expect (terrain, timings, temperature).
  • What to do and what not to do.
  • Clear meeting points and plan B if something changes.

For Ijen, we add health screening and gas management:

  • Screening by trained medical personnel before the hike.
  • Use of gas masks for guests.
  • Clear instructions on when to stop or turn back if conditions change.

For large groups, we may coordinate official traffic police escort on specific road segments, under conditions described in /travel-guide/police-escort-for-groups.

4. Your Responsibilities as a Guest

Safety is shared. We ask you to:

  • Be honest about your health and mobility during booking and check-in.
  • Follow the advice of medical staff during Ijen health screening.
  • Respect local rules, barriers, and restricted zones, even if other visitors ignore them.
  • Stay with your group and do not leave marked paths without your guide.
  • Tell your guide immediately if you feel:
  • unusually short of breath,
  • chest pain,
  • dizziness or confusion,
  • severe anxiety or panic.
  • Bring and use appropriate gear as described in /travel-guide/packing-and-fitness.

Ignoring guide instructions, leaving the trail alone, or attempting to access closed areas makes the tour less safe for everyone and can lead to the activity being stopped.

5. Volcanic Alerts, Weather & Itinerary Changes

Volcanoes and mountain weather can change quickly. We handle this by:

  • Monitoring MAGMA Indonesia and local sources for alert level changes and recommendations.
  • Adjusting departure times, viewpoints or even whole routes if we judge a risk to be unacceptable.
  • Keeping you informed about why a change is happening, in plain language.
  • Applying our closure & reroute policy described in /travel-guide/weather-and-closures and /travel-guide/booking-information.

To see the official national context, you are free to look at:

  • Public MAGMA website (maps, VAR reports, basic status). (Infopublik)
  • The VONA feed (https://magma.esdm.go.id/v1/vona?code=KRA) for aviation notices related to volcanic ash, if you are familiar with such formats.

But remember: JVTO does the interpretation and planning; you do not need to make your own safety decisions from raw codes.

6. Ijen Health Screening and Medical Limits

For Ijen routes, screening is standard:

  • It is included in JVTO Ijen tours.
  • It is performed by trained medical staff following a defined protocol.
  • You may be advised not to hike if certain thresholds or risk factors are present.

Details of how this works, and how we protect your data, are described in /travel-guide/ijen-health-screening.

A “cleared” screening reduces risk, but does not make the hike risk-free. We still watch conditions on the trail, sulfur gas behavior, and overall guest condition. Guides and staff always retain the right to stop or turn back if conditions become unsafe.

7. Insurance, Documents & Emergency Support

We strongly recommend:

  • Travel insurance that explicitly covers:
  • trekking / hiking at moderate altitude,
  • trip interruptions due to natural events,
  • medical evacuation and treatment.
  • Carrying a copy of:
  • passport photo page,
  • insurance policy details,
  • important contact numbers.

On our side, we:

  • Keep emergency contacts and route plans known to the JVTO office.
  • Maintain direct access to local health facilities in our operating area.
  • Follow local and national guidance for evacuations or access restrictions when required.
